Response to crit session.

As if to confirm what I already thought, and also offer further insight, the feedback I got yesterday has inspired me to view this DPS task in a different way. Grid and balance shall be my new mantra. I hope to inject some kind of background theme to my two articles as well. Music is a prominent feature of both, as Noise promote bands and is also a sound itself, and All FM are primarily a music station.

First sketch idea for advertisement for cycling to University.

Using the good old trusty pencil and some type. Having to do so much drawing for my animation project is making me use more tools apart from the computer. Hands up I did sketch it from a printed picture, but wanted a hand drawn feel to it.

Sketchbook work for grid layout.

Plenty of room for changes, but this basic structure has three columns of information and images. There is recognisable symmetry between the pages, but not an exact copy. I have seen some great techniques for breaking up an image with an overlaid grid of the background colour, and giving it more of an impact on the design as a whole. I will experiment with it and post the outcomes.

Meeting went well at Noise Festival

I have submitted questions to both All FM & Noise Festival, and will hear back from them by tomorrow. The meeting at Noise Festival was very positive, and Vic (Operations manager) is happy to help promote our online magazine on the website (Link).

OK, on with the layout plan!

Monday 15 November 2010

I have emailed questions for All FM interview.

Will also follow them up with a phone call. The station is run mostly by volunteers, so just to make sure I get some feedback and possibly a visit to the site soon.
I have moved my meeting with Noise Festival to the afternoon, as there has been an alteration of the time for our study skills workshop from 1PM to 10AM.

Angle for articles.

I have decided to theme the two articles on how students can get involved, and the successes the voluntary oragnisations have had.
Using the successes as the focus, then a short interview with the organisers. Big on visuals not too over wordy! Enough information so people will want to find out more, and also details of how people can get involved themselves. I will stick to a strong layout theme for the articles, something that gets the most impact from the words and pictures.

Advertising DPS idea generation

Here is a campaign run by loveyourbike.org I want to communicate the same message, but specifically aim it at students. further hi-res images from the campaign can be viewed here http://www.manchesterfoe.org.uk/lyb/downloads/Postcards.pdf

All FM happy to answer questions!

All Fm are keen on providing first hand information for my article. Need to be concise and interesting with my questioning. Remembering the target audiences interests and motivations for reading the article.
Jason Cooke volunteer Co-Ordinator / Trainer has kindly agreed to answer any questions via email.

Noise Festival has emailed me back.

http://www.noisefestival.com/ Has got in contact, and I am going into the office tomorrow morning to gather some images and interview the projects manager.

I believe I may have defeated the ugly curves

Seriously, I am tired of looking at this logo. But hey its symmetrical and has lost a few ugly spots. Heres to perseverance and fiddly handles!

Threads I will follow for my online article publications

I am going to choose All FM the local radio station run by volunteers, as my first article. http://www.allfm.org/

Also NoiseFestival profile, as I know the staff there very well. Should be good making a connection there again! /http://www.noisefestival.com/

Lastly I want to run an advertisement for cycling to university as a way to save money and get fit. Using my contacts I have already made at the GMCC (Greater Manchester Cycling Campaign) for reference.

Brainstorm for ideas about online articles.

Our task is to create two DPS (double page spread) articles for an online magazine, plus an online advertisement relating to the articles chosen. The aim is to promote Greater Manchester to art&design students as an amazing place to live, work & study!

My first objective is to outline some areas of interest I have in Manchester. Then refine the one's that stand out and work on those as articles for online publication by the 26th November.

Cycling-

Students need to get to University cheaply!  The quickest and most reliable way is to cycle. I am an avid cyclist, and cycle everywhere I go. Manchester is flat and very easy to cycle around.

Music-

Manchester has a rich heritage of producing great bands, but they would have not sprung up without the vast amount of live music venues around the city. My favourites are 'Matt & Phred's' and also 'Band on the Wall.'

Radio-

The two best Manchester stations for me are XFM and All FM. XFM is a national radio station with a broadcasting station in Manchester, while All FM is a local station serving mostly South Manchester.

Art-

Noise Festival, Mooch & Kraack Gallery are all based in the Northern quarter. I have had some involvement with each of them. But Noise Festival is where I have had work experience. They are a charity set up to promote young people involved in the creative industries.

Main Gallery spaces-

Manchester art gallery (central), Cube gallery and Whitworth gallery.

ISSUU account created.

It's a start, and a jolly good one at that.
